Also alot of the people that took this questionaire are religous, so i shall not ignoere this, although as i did not ask what religions there are at the college, i will be publishing different prayers, readings ect as religion is a sensitive area and i do not wish to upset or offend anyone who thinks that their religion is being neglected in the college magazine

Alot of the people are interested in education, music, horoscopes, sports and fashion. as education is the highest of all, i will be making sure that my college magazine has alot to do with this. i will also make sure that music, sports, horoscopes and fashion make up a large part of the magazine.

The results for this is mixed, so i will be publishing in the magazine all of these subjects, as i believe it will appeal to everyone.

This result links in with the age group results, alot of the people that go to college are looking for a job and are keen to find one, and as they are younger have much difficulty in doing so, so as a result of this question i will be publishing job listings as i believe that it will appeal to the wider audience that should be, hopefully reading this college magazine.

As this is a college magazie and people are doing A levels in which they have to do exams to pass, the results show that publishing revision tips and useful websites would be a useful part of the magazine.

The majority of the people that took my qestionaire dont mind if there is or is not an agony aunt stion in the magazine, so for the people that would appreciate this i have come to the decision that i will publish this once a month in the magazine.

As term dates, exam dates and inset days affect every one who goes to the college, students and staff, as alot of the people would like to have this included in the magazine i think it would be of best interest for every one who is to read the magazine that all of the above should be published in the magazine, but as this does not seem of major importance to the people that took the questionaire i will put a calendar of holidays, inset days and so on on the inside of the front cover and i will put exam dates and the board of which the exam is under on the last page ov the magazine, this makes it quick and efficent for those who do have an interest for these.

Alot of the people are not willing to pay anything for the magazine and my results show that no one is willing to pay up to £1.50 for the magazine, this shows that if the magazine was eitha free or was able to be bought for up to 50p that my magazine will be widely consumed.

Also alot of the people that answered my questionaire would like the college magazine to be a weekly occurance, but some would like it to come out fortnightly, this has helped me make the decison to issue the magazine every week and a half, this is so my magazine is not going to waste.

the majority of the people that took the questionaire would like to have a college magazine in the college, this shows that the magazine should have a high number of readers.

Most of the people that took my questionaire are aged 16, this helps me as i now know that i can base my topics in my magazine that may nt affect the older college teenagers, things such as rights for 16 year olds and laws that are mainly made for 16 year olds?

The results of my first question shows that most of the people that took my questionaire were girls, although there are nearly the same amount of boys that took the quiz, this shows that my magazine should be unisex, but i will incluse a couple more subjects that are particually interesting for girls and do not take up as much interest in boys, such as shopping and horoscopes although it isn't specified for just one hender, it seems to attract more female readers than male.

Cover Pictures

I am going to use this photo for my front cover on my magazine, as it is a medium shot and some of the college is in the background which will help emphasise the fact the magazine is for a college and is for college students.

I chose not to pick this picture because the people in the picture, seem distant and wary of each other, and they do not seem as comfortable as they do in the other picture that i have chosen to use as my college magazine front cover photograph.

textual analysis

In this picture the woman is dressed quite casually in a green top and jeans with a necklace, the woman in this picture seems to be at around 20 years old due to the clothing she is wearing although we cannot be sure her body language and non verbal communication also suggests that she around this age as her arm is hung over the chair and she seems quite pleasant as she is smiling which emphasises that she is happy with her surroundings. Although we are assuming that she is a student at Ridgewater College she may also be a teacher at the college due to the seriousness of the mise-en scene. The although the woman in this image does not have any props the background props gives off a very busy look, the globe which is placed in front of the woman, this emphasises that the College has many people from different countries, cultures and religions it is also backed up by one of the cover lines on the magazine which says,’ Global Learning; How two students from different sides of the world – and came to the same conclusion about a Ridgewater education. The globe may also be a suggestion of the world renowned reputation that the College has. Another background prop is the chairs which suggests that this image has been photographed in a library or a common room as it shows that people are able to sit and either do work or socialize with other students at the college, the last main background prop is the plants which shows it is a healthy and clean setting, it also helps the high key lighting which makes the image look more clean and presentable environment for students and teachers and that the college itself is a good and friendly environment. The inserted picture on the bottom left is of a man in a snow or ice covered environment who seems to be treating a seal that’s next to him, this shows that the man is living his dream and as it is on the college magazine which shows that he has achieved his dreams through this college and that anything is possible it also says on the inserted, ‘how did Tim Lebbing find his way to Alaska and a dream career of working with injured wildlife’ which associates this man with the college. The lighting is very high key which shows it is in the day time or that the lighting is bright to keep the students awake and alert during the long day at college with out making it too over done. Also the colour in the picture also blends well together and shows that there is settlement in the college and that everyone works well within the college community. All in all the picture is promoting the clean and healthy environment that the ridgewater college is trying to promote this is due to the mise-en scene used such as the lighting and the props.

Introduction

Hi my name is Lianne Allwood and I am doing AS level media. I am going to be doing a textual analysis of a college magazine cover, after this I will be doing a college magazine cover of my own. When I was given this assignment we looked at the different conventions in media, such as the mise-en-scene, asymmetrical and symmetrical ect. I also had to look at who I wanted my audience to be, as I was a college magazine I knew it had to appeal to AS and A2 students, I also wanted my college magazine to appeal to all genders. As part of the magazine I had to take a picture to be the front cover, whilst doing this I had to consider who I wanted my magazine to relate to and how they were shown, so I took my picture outside in the natural light as I thought it looked better I also took it at a medium close-up because I wanted to catch some of the body language given off by the people in my pictures and the background of the college. This was the first part of the magazine cover, also for another part of my magazine I had to make sketches of the layout and also research topics to put in my magazine, I will do this by going round the college and seeing what effects people and what people would like to read about.

Lianne's Media Coursework

Discuss the similarities or differences in the representation of one social group in East is East and one other film of your choice.

East is east is set in Manchester in the 1970’s in a poor looking neighbour hood, we can tell this by the way that the camera shots have a birds-eye view of the neighbour hood and shows back to back houses in long rows of houses, and in the street in which cars are supposed to be able to drive lots of children playing outside with things such as sticks, balls and space-hoppers, these space-hoppers help the
mise-en-scene of the film as the space-hopper was very big back in the 70’s. the children all seem very happy as a community and although they are of different races all live happily within a community. The khans have 5 sons and 1 girl who are all around their teens other than the oldest and youngest sons. I will be focusing on different social groups and how they act in their environment.

In this film George is the head of the family this is shown by a vary of things such as the attitude shown towards him from his children and his wife, also by the camera shots used when filming certain parts of the film that George is showing authority. For example, when George walks; in after Tariq messes up the wedding garments after finding that his father has set up an arranged marriage for him and his brother Abdul; the camera is shot up from a high angle shot of George looking down at his son Maneer who is trying to fix the wedding garments after they have been trashed, this is also shown when George attacks both Manner and his wife Ella.

The children of George and Ella are stuck in between two cultures they themselves seem to have taken on more of their mothers English side but are being forced to be a part of a Pakistani environment in which they seem to not be so keen on. Their father is Muslim and they are to take part of this, but when their father is gone and is not in the house they are seen to be eating pork which they aren’t meant to be doing, but when there father comes in, they rush to put everything away and hide the evidence, to make this scene more effective they use canted angle shots and the music also helps set the scene.

Another time you see the children going against their fathers heritage and beliefs is when they are at the back of ‘Georges English chip shop’ which is their fathers chip shop, Tariq and his girlfriend are kissing at the back of the shop, this is shot from a eye level shot, his girlfriend then turns to him and says, ‘were like Romeo and Juliet’. this shows not only the impact that George has on his own children but also the minds of others.

Whilst George is away getting the wedding garments for his sons Tariq and Abdul, Saleem comes down and asks his mum for money for his art work, his father does not know that his son does art but thinks he is doing an engineer course at college, this is another way that shows the fear of their father received by the teenagers in this film. Also in the film there is a part where Meenah is in the street looking threw her legs and this is shot in a point of view shot and shows what Meenah sees threw her own eyes of the street.

The film I will be comparing East is East is Kidulthood as this film involves teenagers, although this film is based on a London life set about 30 years after East is East, this film demonstrates certain teenagers who are in control of their lives unlike the teenagers in East is East where they have to sneak around to live their lives.

Some could argue at the teenagers in East is East well especially Tariq would aspire to be like the teenagers in Kidulthood as they are allowed to go out to parties, they have sex and are not on a leash to what their mothers or fathers. In Kidulthood the teenagers take over their own lives and unlike the teenagers from East is East who fear the raft of their father, the teenagers fear an older teenager called Sam, he is feared both in school and outside of school, they use point of view shots a lot more than East is East as well due to the fact that the teenagers thoughts have more importance to the teenagers in East is East, as the Mother Ella in East is East says to the father George, ‘ If you listened to them, to what they want’. this tells us that the kids thoughts and cares are not considered.
